Ideal for modern gasoline engines. 2007 and up engines are considered modern engines with engine tolerances tighter than the 90's or early 2000's engines. They are better served with a thinner 30 weight oil. 5w30 is a good balance of viscosity for these modern engines. For early 2000's and below engines that has looser engine tolerances. They will be better served with a 40 weight oil and 5w40 is a good viscosity for those engines. Check my other listing for 5w40 oils.

You can check your vehicle's manual for the recommended oil viscosities and ratings that your automaker specifies. Although you can use 30 and 40 weight oils interchangeably on your engines. They will run more efficiently on an ideal viscosity specific on when your engine was manufactured. 

For example, for modern engines better served by 30 weight oils because of tighter clearances inside the engine and you happen to use a 40 weight oil. The end result will be that your engine will have a harder time circulating the oil inside your engine thus making it less efficient in terms of fuel efficiency and cooling. Plus you will hear your engine run rougher than usual. On the other hand if you use a 30 weight oil on older engines with looser clearances better served with 40 weight oils. The end result is that your engine will also run rougher than usual and you will hear more engine noise when it is running hotter like prolonged high rpm operation. But since the oil is thinner, there will be less friction inside the engine thus increasing its fuel efficiency. So get to know your engine and find out which viscosity better serves your engine.
